It is a cicada with yellow and reddish brown spots on a black background.

The color and mottle are similar to those of Lyristes japonicus, but they are one size smaller.

It is a northern species and can be found in beech forests. In southwestern Japan, it inhabits mountains with an altitude of 1000 m or higher.

The bark is very similar to Lyristes flammatus, but with a higher frequency and a continuous sound that sounds like "bee ...".

Adults appear earliest in the same genus, starting in early July.

黒色地に黄色と赤褐色の斑紋があるセミです。

色彩や斑紋はエゾゼミによく似ていますが一回り小型で、♂の腹弁は舌状で長く左右は重ならないことで同属他種と区別できます。
北方系の種類で、ブナ林などで見られる。西南日本では標高１０００ｍ以上の山地に生息します。

鳴き声はアカエゾゼミと非常によく似るが、周波数がより高く「ビー…」と聞こえる連続音で鳴きます。

成虫の出現は同属中で最も早く、7月上旬から現れます。
