イソップ童話『アリとキリギリス』は皆さん知っていると思います。

日本では鳴く虫の代表のひとつです。

飼育が容易で、江戸時代は鳴き声が好まれていた事から竹の籠などに入れて、軒先に吊るして飼われていたそう。

虫の声を楽しむのは世界では日本と中国だけの文化。

東日本にヒガシキリギリス、西日本にニシキリギリスというふうに棲み分けていますが、細かく見ると境界はやや入り組んでいて、大阪府周辺にはニシキリギリスとヒガシキリギリスの両方がパッチ状にすんでいるそうです。東京都周辺でも同じような状態だそうです。

成虫の頭〜翅端までの長さはオス29.0 – 37.0mm、メス30.0 – 39.5mmで、メスの方がやや大きい傾向があります。

 

一般にヒガシキリギリスに比べ、ニシキリギリスは翅が長く黒斑は1列程度か、全くありません。触角は長く、前脚には脚の直径より長い棘があります。メスは腹端に長い産卵器を持っています。

肉食性が強く、ほかの虫を捕らえて食べます。
