スマトラ島の高山部にのみ生息している100mmを越えるホソアカクワガタ属の中では最大種。

体長の半分ほどもある美しい大顎がシカの角のように見えるため、elaphus（雄鹿）と名付けられています。

体色はメタリックグリーンで大顎が青みを帯び、顎の付根と脚にはオレンジ色の模様があります。

その豊かな色彩から色虫と呼ばれ大型種の中では最も美しいクワガタといわれることもあります。
